Author: Perie Wolford Pages: 170 pages Genre: Science Fiction Goodread rated it: 4.36/ 5 Summary: Telling a story about the importance of survival within any circumstances, however strange, and showing a girl-in-a-man’s-world angle, Presence is a novel about Samantha, a woman in her late twenties, both smart and attractive. One day, Samantha’s regular life is suddenly turned around as the fact of her existence is somehow erased from the world. Nobody seems to remember her, her own apartment is occupied by the uninvited tenants, and even her sister, the only family Samantha has, is unable to recognize her. Lost and confused, Samantha accepts help from a stranger, a charismatic man named Archie, whom she accidentally encounters and unwillingly joins him in his fight against the silent invasion of the planet Alpha planet as he calls it; and he himself happens to be a soldier from a parallel one, Beta. The glass wall put between Samantha’s new life and her former life makes her discover the roadside of the world, dark and silent, the hidden place where her primary instincts come to the surface and she finally feels the urge to fight for herself and for others My Review The Characters I loved Samantha, she was vulnerable and strong at the same time. I was rooting for her ALL the time! Samantha is a source of inspiration to all women. Samantha was a trooper, never quit just kept fighting, even when her world around her was tumbling down. I loved the idea of the "system" and how you can just get erased from it. The Plot I LOVED the original, captivating idea of this book. Truth to be told it was the plot that kept me entwined with the book. There were so many new elements that kept getting exposed chapter after chapter that made me want to scream. This book was filled with so many plot twists I questioned life after reading this (because of this book whenever I hear a ringing noise I freak out.) The noise that Samantha heard, that drove her crazy, drove me crazy trying to figure out what it was. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves sci-f

Author: Xunaira J Goodreads rates it: 4.87/5 starsSummary from Goodreads: Meet Sarah, a nine-year old girl with a talent for painting and an adoptive family who supports her in everything she does. She lives a happy life with her foster-father who is her idol and her foster-mother who loves her unconditionally. Little does she know that her past will come back to haunt her and an atrocity that happened nine-year ago would come to light. What will be Sarah’s reaction when she is subjected to a past that she has no knowledge of? Sandy is scared, worried and somewhat irritated because of the weird voices she hears from the attic above. With the help of her best friend, Anne, she decides to find out the source of this all racket but what will she find hidden up there? Would the truth shock her? Will the frail, old and lonely novelist who had managed to incur an emotion so inside him be able to change the course of his life? Self-made and hardworking Jenny was looking forward to the opening ceremony of her novel when she is subjected to the hatred and scorn of her best friend, Cindy and made a laughingstock in town. Will Jenny be able to hold her head high? My Rating: 4.69/5 stars My Review: Abandoned in the Attic I liked Sarah I found her sweet and it was no wonder that her charisma charmed everyone into loving and protecting her, overall Sarah was a very likable character. I loved this story because on every page a felt a new degree of suspense. I was quite shocked when Xunaira revealed the conditions of how Sarah was raised. I found Alice's heart to be quite warm and her to be quite kind, she never had to take Sarah in but she did, and that was amazingly kind of her. Footsteps in the attic Oh my sweet goodness! This short story left me with goosebumps, I was shivering all the time, and when I thought I figured this out, man I was so far from wrong. If you love suspenseful books this is definitely the story for you! The Novelist This story actually reminded me of a story my grandparents and parents would tell me, which is why I loved this full book, they're tales we've all heard before but with an interesting twist bestowed upon them. I loved this one the most, it taught me that even thoughts have power which was hauntingly beautiful. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony I also loved this story (surprise, surprise) this story follows a women's journey and her ugly emotions just to get what she wants, I related to this book because our emotions aren't always positive and the theme of this story showed us what these ugly emotions can lead to. Like all of these stories Xunaira provides us with excellent work with famous morals that we all hear throughout our childhood. Why didn't I rate this 5 stars if I loved it so much? I didn't rate this 5 stars because writing short stories is very hard, and it is extremely hard to portray character development in a matter of pages. I admit, Xunaira did a magnificent job writing this book but sometimes I found some characters undeveloped. Don't get me wrong though, this is By: Leigh Ann Kopans Genre: Romance, Young Adult Pages: 300 Goodreads rate: 4.44/5 stars Summary From Goodreads: 1 crush on your best friend + 1 gorgeous, scheming new girl + 1 Mathletics competition = 1 big mess SIMPLIFY. Ashley Price doesn’t have much in life after being bullied so hard she had to leave her old school to live with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. But the camera she borrowed from her best friend and secret crush Brendan, and her off the charts math abilities, make things a lot more bearable. Plus, since Brendan is the captain, making the school Mathletes team should be easy. But when gorgeous new girl Sofia rolls in and steals Brendan, Ashley's place on the team, and her fragile foothold on the Mansfield Park Prep social totem pole, it’s on. Sofia is everything Ashley left her old school to escape. The only thing Ashley didn’t count on is Sofia’s sexy twin brother Vincent. Vincent is not only the hottest boy in school, he’s charming, sweet, and he’s got his eye on Ashley. He’s also not taking no for an answer. There's no real reason Ashley shouldn't like Vincent, but with the battle lines being drawn between her and Sofia, Ashley’s not sure which side he’s on. Or which side she wants him to be on. She does know Sofia is trouble with a capital T, and she’s determined to make Brendan see it. SOLVING FOR EX is a YA contemporary romance that remixes Mansfield Park as Clueless meets Mean Girls in a crazy mix of high school society, mathletic competition, and teenage romance. My Review My Rate: 4.6/5 stars The Plot I found this book adorable, I agree I might be a little biased, being a nerd and all, but I feel like any reader that liked contemporary romance would like this book. This book did take on the plot of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park and resembled it in many ways. One of the things I didn't like about this book was that I have already read Mansfield Park and I had already knew the outcome of the book, which was a little disappointing (there's nothing worse when you know the outcome of books). I found it adorable how at the end of each chapter Leigh left a little math problem that when solved would leave a message, the answer would be portrayed in the first few chapters but towards the end they would stop with the answer. The math problems might be a little harder for younger math students. There were some parts in the book that was a little confusing, like when Brendan said he didn't like Sofia but then still kissed her, I found it a little puzzling. The Characters The characters were a little confusing at times, first we get Vincet, he's charming and kind, but then he blows up at Ashley for nothing, it just wasn't his character, he showed no signs of moodiness or traits of anger, he just exploded. It was so out of context that I was surprised, but not in a good way, if you want a character to explode like that you need a little foreshadowing, sure there was the part when he was cheating but I just didn't expect it. By: Ace Hansen Genre: Fiction, comedy Age Group advised: 3-5th grade Summary: When a mysterious green gas crisis breaks wind, the Global Air Group (GAG) offers a million-dollar prize to the first person to discover the cause. Julius Caesar Brown dreams of winning the cash so he can pay off Jake the Snake, the blackmailing bully who threatens to ruin his chances with the cutest girl in fifth grade. But Julius can barely pass a math test, let alone solve an international scientific mystery. What he needs is money. Fast. His mom volunteers him to help the Zombie Lady. Yeah. The crazy woman down the street who every kid knows eats boys’ brains. But Miss Crabtree’s no zombie. And winning the million-dollar prize may not be as far-fetched as Julius once though My Review My Rate: 2 . 8/5 stars The Plot I wanted to start this of by saying this isn't an ordinary review. I didn't find it far to review this book from a logical thinker's viewpoint when this book was so not intended for over thinkers for me, so what I did was I let my little brother read this book and tell me what I thought, but it also isn't fair for me not to review this book, so I'm going to write a review from my standpoint and his. (this is my review write now that you are reading). First of all I found it kind of weird/original that this book was based of off farts. I sort of understand that the book is supposed to contain childish humor but I didn't get the jokes that I think were jokes. There were a little tid-bits which did bother me, first of all these are 6th graders, I don't know where Ace Hansen lives but in America 6th grade is middle school, so why would the characters be going to Hoover Elementary, and I do know 6th graders and some are immature but I don't think they would be so immature as to throw up over gross pictures, maybe shield their eyes but NOT throw up. I feel like Ace was trying to foreshadow by talking about Space Pop's a lot and being very specific about the fact that they kept selling out of it at stores, but in the first 30 pages of the book I already knew that the victim of the Green Gas was the Space Pops. The Characters To me, this book was full of stereotypical characters. We have Millie, classic annoying younger sister with a humongous crush on her brother's best friend, but if Millie is the younger sister of 6th graders why would she be on the Middle School bus, wouldn't she be with the Elementary kids? Maybe you guys know something about this that I don't. What I did like about this book is that you take the classics, the kid being bullied, the beautiful girl you want to go out with, the old lady down the street, and you combine all of it into one book, that's amazing. The character's names stumbled me a little bit, Ace talks about how their mom named them after Roman leaders because she loved her trip to Italy, the only thing is, is that this is only mentioned once and not even repeated again. Another tid-bit I also didn't like how Ivy was mad at Julius for one picture, it wasn't even that bad. The only bad thing about that picture was that it made her throw up, that picture definitely shouldn't cause a large grudge against Julius. Would I recommend this book to others? Honestly, It depends what age group these people are. If these people are past 5th grade then I would highly suggest against this book. Some people might say that this book is for all ages but I kind of feel like this book would be a little immature for people over the age of 10, but the only thing might be the length of the book, which might be a little strenuous for kids under 10. My Brother's Review The Plot (This actually took me a while to explain to my little brother). My brother apparently liked the idea of the green gas and actually made him laugh a lot, although he did said that he could guess that the reason behind the green gas was the space pops, so again as I mentioned earlier, not good foreshadowing. The Characters According to my brother, he liked Julius (sorry I couldn't get more from him) and that's all he really had to say about the book. (3rd graders, huh?) Would he recommend it? He said he would recommend it to his friends because it make him look "smarty" because how long it was. Honestly, my brother's reading skills are advanced, which is why he could probably get through the lengthy book. Author: Kiera Cass First book: The Selection (I will do a review for this book too) Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy, Fiction What Goodreads rated it as: 3.96/5 stars Summary from Goodreads Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Illea. America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide. Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending. My Rate: 3.9/5 stars The Plot I feel like the Elite should come with a warning: DO NOT READ THIS IF YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN POTENTIAL DANGER. C . S Lewis once said "A truly good book makes you want to cry, scream, laugh and smile" These are the exact words I would use to describe Kiera Cass' exceptional book. This book left me laughing, crying, furious in every chapter. There were some parts where I wanted to throw my kindle at a wall, why? I honestly don't know. There's a certain charm to Kiera Cass' books that make you want to keep reading even if you hate the book, now when I say hate, I don't literally hate it, I just got irked by all the plot twists that took place. This book it goes through so much, a lot of reviewers talked about how nothing went on in this book, but if you analyze this book you will see how much was revealed in this book. For example, Marlee, the king's true personality, America's big screw up. Reviewers also said America's feelings kept changing between Aspen and Maxon, OF COURSE THEY DID, The events that Kiera Cass placed strategically across the books were supposed to change America's feeling to both boys. The reason America's feelings changed was because of what happened in these events, Kiera Cass was trying to reveal their true traits. I applaud Kiera Cass, she added all these juicy tidbits which kept us engaged when we felt like putting the book down for a break, I actually read this book for an hour because I didn't want to even pause to take a breath. The characters Finally, I was really trying not to go to in-depth to the characters in the plot. There were certain points when I wanted to go punch some characters in the novel. For example, When Maxon was like "I want to keep Celeste, I know she's manipulative and all, I still want to keep her in the contest" I was like, Are you serious? You said it yourself, she's manipulative you can't keep her! I did find America a little whiny at points and I did find that she did cry a lot. I felt that the characters weren't that developed as they could be but, I still liked them for some reason. The saddest thing though was that my favorite character in this book was that random rebel in the forrest, and she didn't even have any lines, she just bowed sarcastically. And that point I was like "that girl, I like her". When Marlee went out with Carter I was like HOLY! I didn't even realize it at that time but Kiera Cass was foreshadowing a huge piece of mystery, I mean when reading the pages that mentioned Carter I was like, "why is she talking about a random guard that no one cares about". When I found out that the king was beating Maxon, I was like, America you screwed up big time, I was actually satisfied that America told Aspen to beat it, that's when I pulled out the confetti and had a little party. (whoop whoop) Would I recommend this series to others I know my review sounded negative but I loved this book so, so much. At some points I did have mixed feelings for this book but it was more like a "Kiera did NOT just do that, how could she do that" I would definitely tell all my friends to read this series. This series targets young adults who enjoy fantasy and romance which is why this book was perfect for me because I love these genres. Will I be reading the final book? Hell yes, I love this book and I am dying for The One (May 6th 2014). That's why I gave away the Selection series for part of my giveaway. The Selection series is in my top 5 and one of the books I will carry around for a life tim. Kiera Cass doesn't get half the attention she deserves for this phenomenal book. If you haven't read this book yet, shame on you, go get it now, buy it now! I normally don't do hard copies but I had to purchase a hard copy for The One because this book deserves to be bought in a hard copy. |
